Kava is a plant in the pepper family, native to the South Pacific Islands and has been traditionally used for ceremonial and social purposes for centuries. It's root is dried, ground up then mixed in warm water and strained into a communal bowl. Kava is consumed socially for its sedative, hypnotic, muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, and euphoric effects which stem primarily from six major kavalactones. These active compounds modulate GABA, dopamine, norepinephrine, and CB1 receptors in the brain. Kava also produces a numbing sensation in the mouth due to its anesthetic properties
